Notesbackcut was where i found some real drop. by the end i think i figured out the entrance was several feet downstream from the V of the eddyline from where i thought it should be. 50/50 head under, maybe 4 out of 10 was a longer roam. could be better, like it was before, but it was still good enough to trance, theres no where id rather be on a sunny afternoon.. underwater. it was pleasantly not brain freezing for a change.

NotesWinter set at the new Ranch. Tehan solo...Thom walked down to the spot with me (new gate and fence for dog...see Tehan for beta). Pretty poor mystery set, but fun to play in whirlpools that have formed at the tailout of the spot. Flow is way different. Tip of the island has eroded. (no sandy beach any more). As a result, the side channel flow is not focused...seam all mushed up. no lens rides. eddy is really different. log is gone. powerful whirlpools surging at the tailout of the arena...had some good drops here, but current tends to pin against the shelf...not cool at all. mnormal entry was hard...shallow 3-5 seconds rides all I could muster (did not try to go deep in the whirlpool zone...too scary)

Notestim and joel hit the ranch today. new ranch is much more fickle. the big rides are there, just harder to come by. looks like the mid-2000cfs days are like the mid-1000cfs days of the last few years. we had a good set but only a few easy in big rides. worked hard for a bunch of em.

Notesjoel, jono, and tehan stopped in at the ranch after a big buster session. ranch was giving up giant rides with pfds on. definitely not too scary, i was givin it all i had, and never got sketched out. last year 2600 was scary. 2600 felt like the 1900 of last year.

Notesweaver, tehan, jono, and I hit the Ranch today. The new ranch is taking some getting used to. the big downtime is still there, but the entry is much more mushy and variable. seems you have to get down deep very quickly, or hit a big late drop. very cold today.

NotesAs tim and joel put it: this is the NEW SQUIRT RANCH. with a total spot reconstruction. the shelf is gone and its more of a gentle sloping downward.. and the most fun rides were a couple feet from the bottom sliding down that ledge. There is a huge vortex on the eddy line that is really cool to look at as you fly next to it. Going through it was ripping my goggles off.. the whirlpool stretched several feet underwater. Pretty awesome!

NotesTotal spot blowout and reconstruction. the last flood was tenth biggest on record, and it shows on the Lower Clackamas. The island has been scoured over, and the shelf has been blown out and smoothed out, filling in the gulch. The entry is tougher, but the drop is still there. There is a whirlpool about halfway down the eddyline that is like a brick wall. Sometimes you ride with it, sometimes it tears you apart, sometimes you can ride under it on the bottom and watch it spin. The water was frigid. Overall, we have a new Ranch. It will be interesting to see what happens at lower water.

Notesam set with Miles. Really good.. got a variety of rides, and all were really fun and different. world class. Got alittle hypothermic cause my drysuit suddenly has a couple holes in it... we were doing jumping jacks on the island. there was a bald eagle watching us sink for a while.

Notesvery excellent session today. pretty low but still dishing up 15ers. plenty of lap pool rides, 10 second rides surfacing in the same exact entry spot. the sweet charc was a trap door straight down. a little dead zone of water on the low downstream side of the squeeze where you could sink quickly into the current. probably good even a bit lower.

NotesMiles and Michael had glorious fall Sun afternoon session. Amazingly friendly level. No PFDs; hand paddles only. All the Ranch rides were possible...laps in the lap pool were common...2 and 3 laps...come up for quick breath, then second drop could be deep. Fun shallow retentive spins high in the safety beach eddy. Regular traveling rides were had too, both the ones where you cross under the current, and the ones that spit you out deep in the eddy. Even had a traveling ride out into the current, went deep, then caught the lap pool current and traveled back upstream to the start spot?!? Entry was smooth and consistent. Water was way clear...Tapped the shelf with my bow couple of times. Scooped out a sculpin in my bow tunnel when exiting. Took Dottie a nice bottle of champagne for the holidays...left a magnum of Cabernet for Thom and fam from the whole posse...happy holidays!!!

NotesTim, Mike, & Joel hit the Ranch today. Lower but clearer than yesterday. The lap pool was starting to happen. This level is getting near the new low end of the Ranch. Another 200cfs lower and it might be outta there.

NotesTim, Schnelle, and Joel hit it today. Big rides by all! Schnelle was out for his first mystery session in five years! It only took about 30 minutes of getting used to the Wisper and the Ranch before he was hitting 20+ers. Great level, clearer than Monday.

NotesTim and I had a great set today. Water murky, rides amazing, it was giving up all you wanted. The range has definitely changed. This felt like the 1800cfs of last year.

NotesTruly epic. Think staying away from home for twenty years, sailing around the Mediterrianian, & coming back and slaughtering the suitors who have been wooing your wife and drinking your beer. Like Joel says, 2400 is the new 1500 - if so inclined, you can just go for it. Big smooth, and deep, skip the thrash! and go pure instant drop to the calmness.

NotesThe Ranch came in for one day. Stro got in his one good ranch set today. Water was murkier, but the spot was jammin! Stro had more backcut success than ive ever seen at the Ranch. Tim had his usual solid consistency. It was good to get a nice window for the Ranch.

Notesriver slowly dropping, ranch still amazing! the flow at the point is a few inches deep, but the seam is still 10 feet out from the shelf. Arthur, Weaver, and I hit it, with the WA crew of Dale, Stacey, and Allan joining us later. big consistent rides were the order of the day. Pretty much a full on MTV spring break party on the river all day. We estimate that at least 3000 people floated by us today. At any given time I never counted less than 100 people in sight. Crazy! More cops on the shelf, but they were actually helping clear out the riff-raff.

NotesFriday night dusk session with Tim, Tehan, Weaver. We all hit monster rides; with multiple 20+ers, and probably ten rides in the 25-30 range. wow what a spot! the upper flow was getting shallower. seam still SICK and deep though.

Notesexcellent downtime once again today at the Ranch. its still juiced up and really just all nerves and appetite. staying calm can yield extremely deep, serene, bottom feeding 20+ers. doing too much work or losing it mentally will get you stuck in the turbulent layer for nerve-racking, breath killing ten second rides. What a spot.

Notesanother sick session today. lots of action on the river. there was a police river block just below the Ranch. thought i was gonna get hassled for no PFD but we escaped. the downtime was awesome, less turbulent and less scary than yesterday.

NotesFirst time at the Ranch since the last high water event. Its still there and still juicy at 2250cfs! It is a little different, as it always is. We had to break through a turbulent layer to get out to the silky serene rides. the deeper the ride, the calmer the water, but that also meant keeping a calm head to stay down there. Overall it didnt take long to dial in our entries and get huge down time. I tapped bottom once on the way out. looking good for a while, although the lower end might be higher this year.
